Apex Affect exists to make culturally affirming haircare a pathway to confidence, dignity, school engagement, and community wellness for the people who need it most.
This is care work. Confidence work. School readiness, family support, mental health, and community belonging — delivered through a culturally competent lens by a team rooted in Los Angeles.
Hair Is Not Just Hair
Hair is not just hair. It is documented. When someone's hair is done, their confidence rises, their anxiety decreases, and they show up differently in the classroom, on the job interview, in the world.
For children already navigating poverty, bullying, and systemic neglect, that difference is measurable. At The Apex Affect, it is the foundation of everything we do.

Why Jocelyn Built Apex Affect
“I started doing my own hair at 12 because my mom couldn't do ‘big girl styles,’ and I was growing up.”
Haircare became a part of my life early, but my understanding of its deeper impact came from my grandmother. She was paralyzed from the waist down, and something as routine as going to a salon was oftentimes inaccessible because so few spaces were equipped to accommodate her. By circumstance, I became her little stylist (which I loved). Caring for her hair wasn't just about how she looked. It was about preserving her dignity, helping her feel like herself, and reminding her that accessibility extends far beyond ramps and doorways.
That experience stayed with me. It sparked a lifelong curiosity about how we could bring care to people instead of expecting people to always find their way to care.
Years later, I earned my master's degree in teaching, became a licensed cosmetologist, and spent my career serving as an educator, instructional coach, and school district leader. Those experiences gave me the unique opportunity to study people in some of life's most vulnerable moments. I saw students withdraw because they lacked confidence. I met adults preparing for job interviews who wanted to make a strong first impression but didn't know where to begin. I worked alongside individuals struggling to care for themselves while navigating grief, mental health challenges, disability, financial hardship, or major life transitions. Across every setting, I noticed the same thing: people weren't simply looking for hair services. They were looking for hope, guidance, confidence, and someone willing to meet them where they were.
That's why I founded The Apex Affect.
Our programs are designed to meet people in the midst of their unique circumstances. Sometimes that means providing culturally affirming haircare. Sometimes, it means connecting someone to resources they didn't know existed, creating community where isolation has taken root, or opening conversations around wellness, confidence, and identity that are too often overlooked. We stand in the gap, helping people overcome hair-related barriers while empowering them to move forward with greater confidence and connection.
Because sometimes changing a life begins with something as simple as helping someone see themselves differently. At The Apex Affect, we believe confidence isn't a luxury. It's a catalyst.

Age 12
Doing her own hair
Jocelyn begins doing her own hair when her mother could no longer manage the styles she was growing into — the first quiet lesson in what haircare actually carries.
Community
Serving before the nonprofit had a name
The work took shape in many shades long before Apex Affect existed. In college, Jocelyn did anyone's hair for free who needed it, keeping a collection jar near her room that stayed filled — people left what they wanted, or nothing at all.
Education
A decade shaping students, teachers, and systems
As a Master’s-degreed Master Educator across multiple states, Jocelyn instructs students, coaches district leaders, and facilitates professional development — watching, up close, how appearance, care, and belonging quietly shape attendance, participation, and confidence in every child she encounters.

Life's work concretized as a 501(c)(3)
Backpack drives were everywhere. But there weren't a lot of resources focused on how haircare shapes confidence, school engagement, and belonging. In April 2023, everything Jocelyn had already been doing — in classrooms, at her college dorm, at kitchen tables, and inside communities — was officially concretized as Apex Affect Incorporated, a 501(c)(3) community wellness nonprofit built to close that exact gap.

Today, Jocelyn leads The Apex Affect as a connector of people — bridging schools, families, stylists, faith spaces, civic partners, and community organizers into a single, dignity-first ecosystem. Under her leadership, the organization delivers culturally affirming haircare, school-based support, caregiver education, wellness resources, and community activations to children, families, seniors, and neighbors navigating real barriers.
